The new extreme right in Portugal: the case of Chega

Abstract

The changes in the Portuguese political system during 2019 have generated qualitative changes in the composition of the Portuguese parliamentary chamber. The entry of an extreme right-wing force, for the first time, implies a change in the party system itself in the long run, which may imply changes in both the party system and the political system. The aim of this text is to analyse the context of the emergence and irruption of Chega, as well as the elements and characteristics of this formation.
